Maritime Emergency Trauma/Medical Management

Emergencies at sea bring with them a unique set of circumstances and challenges, including the prolonged delay from the time of injury to receiving definitive medical care. The Maritime Trauma/Medical Management course is designed to teach those who work or engage in activities in the maritime environment (commercial lobster and fishing industry, whale-watch operators, charter fishing operators, yachtsmen, industrial marine operators) the fundamental skill set necessary to effectively manage life-threatening trauma or medical emergencies at sea.

This course will prepare attendees to be ready and equipped for the immediate assessment and treatment of a victim suffering from a serious trauma or medical emergency and teach the key components required to stabilize these patients until the time they are evacuated by the Coast Guard or other maritime rescue agency. Course curriculum includes the most up to date methods to provide bleeding control, airway management, chest and abdominal trauma, splinting of fractures, recognition and treatment of patients in shock or having seizures, managing cardiac emergencies and instruction on how to perform high-quality CPR.

The content of this course is evidence-based and consistent with current practice as set forth by the American College of Surgeons, the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Executive Council.
